  1. Audubon, John James 1785-1851.
  2. US naturalist and artist.  In 1827, after
  3. extensive travels and observations of birds,
  4. he published the first part of his Birds of
  5. North America, with a remarkable series of
  6. colour plates. Later he produced a similar
  7. work on North American quadrupeds. He was
  8. born in Santo Domingo (now Haiti) and 
  9. educated in Paris. The National Audubon
  10. Society (founded 1886) has branches 
  11. throughout the USA and Canada for the study
  12. and protection of birds.
